The Inflation Monster: Why Money Loses Value

A hands-on field mission for the Discovery Rangers episode.

Listen to the episode

In our "Inflation Monster" episode, we learned how too much money can make prices climb like a monster! This happens when a country prints way too much of its own money. When there's lots of money but not many new things to buy, each bit of money becomes worth less. Your Ranger Mission today is to be a money detective and see how prices change right in your own neighborhood!

The Big Question

Why do the prices of things we want sometimes go up over time?

What You'll Need

  • A notebook or paper
  • A pen or pencil
  • A grown-up helper

Mission Steps

  1. Visit the Store. With your grown-up, go to a familiar store (like a grocery or toy store).
  2. Spot the Prices. Look at the prices of 3-5 items you often buy (like a specific cereal, a type of fruit, or a small toy).
  3. Write Them Down. Write down the item and its price in your notebook.
  4. Compare Later. Over the next few weeks or months, visit the same store and check the prices of those same items again.
  5. Record Changes. Write down the new prices and see if they've changed since your first visit.

Talk About It

  • What items did you look at, and what were their prices the first time you checked?
  • Did the prices of any of the items go up, down, or stay the same?
  • If prices went up, what do you think might have caused it?

Take It Further

For older rangers (ages 9-12), try tracking the price of one specific item over a whole year. You could also research the inflation rate for your country and see how your tracked prices compare to the official numbers. This might involve looking up historical price data online with your grown-up's help.

FAQ

Q: I don't have a store nearby, what can I do? A: You can look at online store flyers or websites for a store you know. Prices are usually listed there too! Q: What if the prices went down? A: Sometimes sales or special deals can make prices go down. This is different from inflation, which is a general rise in prices over a longer time. Q: Is inflation always bad? A: Small amounts of inflation are normal for a growing economy, but when prices rise too fast, like with the "inflation monster," it can cause problems.

The Ranger Field Mission

Works after any episode · Any age · No equipment

Run this after every episode to turn listening into something your child actually keeps. Do as many steps as they have energy for — even one counts.

  1. 1

    Say it back

Before snacks or screens, ask your Ranger to teach you the one big idea — as if you'd never heard it.

  2. 2

    Find it in the wild

Hunt for one real example of today's idea — in the kitchen, the yard, the sky, or the sidewalk. Point at it and name it.

  3. 3

    Make something

Draw it, build it from what's on the table, act it out, or record a 20-second “Ranger report.” Making it forces real understanding.

  4. 4

    Ask the next question

Finish with “What's one thing the episode didn't answer?” Stick it on the fridge — that's the start of the next adventure.
