The Amazing Hummingbird: How They Fly So Fast

In our latest episode, we learned about the incredible speed and agility of hummingbirds, the smallest birds with the biggest flying talents! Now, let's become hummingbird flight engineers ourselves and explore how they achieve their amazing aerial feats.

The Big Question

How can we make a mini-model that mimics the unique way a hummingbird’s wings move?

What You'll Need

  • Two strips of paper, about 1 inch wide and 6 inches long
  • One pencil or pen
  • Tape

Mission Steps

  1. Create the Wings. Take one strip of paper and fold it in half lengthwise. This will be your first wing. Repeat with the second strip for the other wing.
  2. Attach the Wings. Tape the folded edges of your two paper wings onto the eraser end of your pencil, side-by-side, so they stick out like a bird’s wings.
  3. Make Them Hum. Hold the pencil firmly. Now, quickly spin the pencil between your hands, making the paper wings flutter. Try spinning it in both directions to see what happens!

  • What did you notice about how the paper wings moved when you spun the pencil?
  • How is spinning the pencil similar to or different from how a hummingbird's wings move?
  • What do you think would happen if the paper wings were bigger or smaller?

Take It Further

For older rangers, try experimenting with different wing shapes and sizes. Cut your paper strips into triangles or ovals, or make them longer or shorter. See if you can discover what makes the best "hummingbird wing" for fast spinning. You can even try adding a second pencil or stick to mimic how a hummingbird uses its wings to "push" air.

Q: My paper wings just flopped around. How can I make them move better? A: Make sure you folded the paper strips tightly. Also, try spinning the pencil faster and more smoothly. The key is quick, consistent movement! Q: This doesn't look like a hummingbird's wings. Why is it different? A: Hummingbirds' wings are much more complex and powerful. Our paper model is a simplified way to show the idea of rapid flapping, not an exact replica. Q: How does this show the figure-8 motion? A: While the paper doesn't truly move in a figure-8, the rapid spinning creates air movement that mimics the effect of lift and thrust generated by such a motion.
