Super Sniffers: Amazing Animal Noses

A hands-on field mission for the Discovery Rangers episode.

Listen to the episode

Get ready to explore the incredible world of smells, just like the super sniffers we learned about in "Super Sniffers: Amazing Animal Noses"! This mission will help you understand how powerful a sense of smell can be, even for us humans.

The Big Question

How much can you smell when you really focus?

What You'll Need

  • A small blindfold or scarf
  • 3-5 different small items with distinct smells (e.g., a piece of fruit, a spice, a flower, a clean sock, a book)
  • A helper (parent or sibling)

Mission Steps

  1. Prepare Your Smells. Gather your items and have your helper place them somewhere accessible but out of sight.
  2. Blindfold Your Sniffer. Have your helper gently blindfold you so you can't see what you're smelling.
  3. Sniff and Guess. Have your helper bring one item at a time close to your nose. Take a deep sniff and try to guess what it is.
  4. Reveal and Discuss. After each guess, remove the blindfold to see if you were right. Repeat with all items.

Talk About It

  • What was the easiest smell to guess? What made it easy?
  • Were there any smells that were tricky? Why do you think that was?
  • How is focusing on smelling different from just walking around and smelling things normally?

Take It Further

For older Rangers (9-12), try making your own "scent trail." Have your helper walk a short, simple path and leave a faint scent (like rubbing a piece of fruit on the floor or a doorknob). Then, try to follow the trail by scent alone!

FAQ

Q: What if I don't have things with strong smells? A: Try things that are common in your home. Even a favorite toy or a piece of clothing can have a unique scent. Q: My child is too young to guess, what should we do? A: Focus on describing the smell. Use words like "sweet," "yucky," "warm," or "fresh," and talk about what the smell reminds them of. Q: Is it safe to blindfold my child? A: Yes, as long as an adult is supervising closely and guiding the child throughout the entire mission. Ensure the blindfold is not too tight.

The Ranger Field Mission

Works after any episode · Any age · No equipment

Run this after every episode to turn listening into something your child actually keeps. Do as many steps as they have energy for — even one counts.

  1. 1

    Say it back

Before snacks or screens, ask your Ranger to teach you the one big idea — as if you'd never heard it.

  2. 2

    Find it in the wild

Hunt for one real example of today's idea — in the kitchen, the yard, the sky, or the sidewalk. Point at it and name it.

  3. 3

    Make something

Draw it, build it from what's on the table, act it out, or record a 20-second “Ranger report.” Making it forces real understanding.

  4. 4

    Ask the next question

Finish with “What's one thing the episode didn't answer?” Stick it on the fridge — that's the start of the next adventure.
