Shrek's Silly Swamp Secrets: Layered Laughs for Everyone

Welcome, Discovery Rangers! After our journey into Shrek's Silly Swamp, we learned that just like a swamp has different layers, so does our Earth! Now it's your turn to explore these hidden layers right in your own home.

The Big Question

How can we see the different "layers" of the Earth without digging a super deep hole?

What You'll Need

• A clear glass or jar
• Water
• Vegetable oil
• Honey or corn syrup
• Food coloring (optional)

Mission Steps

1. Gather Supplies. Get your clear container and your liquids ready.
2. Add the Deepest Layer. Pour a layer of honey or corn syrup into the bottom of the jar. If you want to make it look more like mud, add a drop of brown food coloring.
3. Add the Middle Layer. Carefully pour a layer of water on top of the honey. If you want to add a swampy green color, add a drop of green food coloring to the water before pouring.
4. Add the Top Layer. Gently pour a layer of vegetable oil on top of the water. Watch as it forms its own distinct layer!

Take It Further

For older rangers, try researching the actual layers of the Earth: the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core. What are they made of, and what are their temperatures like? See if you can find other household liquids that might represent these layers or add more liquids to your jar to represent the mantle and core.

Q: My liquids mixed together a little, what went wrong? A: Pour slowly and gently down the side of the jar to help them stay separate. It's okay if they mix a tiny bit; it still shows the concept!
