The dazzling light show we call the Perseid meteor shower happens because Earth passes through the dusty trail left by a specific comet named 109P/Swift-Tuttle. This comet is a bit of a traveler, taking about 133 years to make one trip around the Sun. Even when the comet itself is far away, its dusty trail sticks around in space, waiting for Earth to visit.

On a typical night during the shower, you might see about 10 to 20 meteors per hour. But during the peak, under dark, clear skies, that number can jump to an amazing 60 to 100 meteors every hour! In rare cases, with perfect conditions, astronomers have even counted over 200 meteors per hour.

All the meteors in the Perseid shower seem to originate from a specific point in the sky. This point is called the radiant, and it’s located in a star pattern, or constellation, called Perseus. That's where the shower gets its name!
