Robot Noses vs Super Sniffer Dogs: Who Detects Disease Best?

A hands-on field mission for the Discovery Rangers episode.

Listen to the episode

In our episode "Robot Noses vs Super Sniffer Dogs," we explored the amazing power of smell, from a dog's incredible nose to the science behind electronic noses. Now, let's put our own "noses" to the test with a mission to explore the scents around us!

The Big Question

How can we use our sense of smell to identify different things in our environment?

What You'll Need

  • Small, opaque containers (like film canisters, small boxes, or even just paper cups with holes poked in the top)
  • Various items with distinct smells (e.g., a piece of fruit, a flower petal, a cotton ball with vanilla extract, a dry tea bag, a leaf, a coin)

Mission Steps

  1. Gather Your Scents. Collect a variety of safe, common items from around your home or yard that have different smells.
  2. Prepare Your Containers. Place one scent item into each opaque container. If using cups, poke a few small holes in the bottom or top so the scent can escape but you can't see inside.
  3. Sniff and Guess. Have one person close their eyes while another person hands them a container to sniff.
  4. Record Your Guesses. Write down or draw what you think the smell is. Then, open the container to see if you were right!
  5. Compare and Discuss. Try sniffing the same items again to see if you can identify them more easily. Discuss which smells were easy or hard to guess and why.

Talk About It

  • What was the easiest smell to identify, and what made it easy to recognize?
  • Which smells were the most surprising or difficult to guess? Why do you think that was?
  • How does this mission compare to how a dog or a robot might "smell" and identify things?

Take It Further

For older rangers, try gathering items that smell similar (like different types of fruit or different herbs) and see if you can tell them apart. Discuss how a dog's specialized nose, with millions more scent receptors than ours, could do this even better.

FAQ

Q: What if my child has allergies or sensitivities to certain smells? A: Always ensure the items you choose are safe and won't cause a reaction. Stick to common, mild scents like fruits or unscented items if needed. Q: Can we do this without physical containers? A: Yes! You can simply hold up the items for your child to smell, as long as they keep their eyes closed. Just be sure they don't peek!

The Ranger Field Mission

Works after any episode · Any age · No equipment

Run this after every episode to turn listening into something your child actually keeps. Do as many steps as they have energy for — even one counts.

  1. 1

    Say it back

Before snacks or screens, ask your Ranger to teach you the one big idea — as if you'd never heard it.

  2. 2

    Find it in the wild

Hunt for one real example of today's idea — in the kitchen, the yard, the sky, or the sidewalk. Point at it and name it.

  3. 3

    Make something

Draw it, build it from what's on the table, act it out, or record a 20-second “Ranger report.” Making it forces real understanding.

  4. 4

    Ask the next question

Finish with “What's one thing the episode didn't answer?” Stick it on the fridge — that's the start of the next adventure.
