The Big Question

Can we really build roads out of old plastic, and what happens to the plastic when it's used in roads?

What You'll Need

• A few small, clean plastic items (e.g., bottle caps, small plastic toy pieces, plastic film pieces)
• A small amount of playdough or modeling clay
• A flat surface or tray

Mission Steps

1. Inspect Your Plastic. Look closely at the different types of plastic you have. What shapes are they? What colors? Feel their texture.
2. Mix It Up. Pretend your playdough is the hot asphalt used to make roads. Now, try to press your small plastic pieces into the playdough.
3. Build a Mini Road. Mix the plastic pieces into the playdough as best you can. See how the plastic changes the playdough's texture. Can you make a small, flat "road" shape?
