What You'll Need

• A notebook or paper
• A pen or pencil
• A grown-up helper

Mission Steps

1. Choose Your Items. With your helper, pick 3-5 common items you buy regularly, like milk, bread, a specific toy, or a movie ticket.
2. Record Today's Price. Write down the name of each item and its current price.
3. Check Again Later. A week or two later, visit the store (or check online) and record the price of the exact same items again.
4. Compare the Numbers. Look at your two lists. Did any prices change?

Talk About It

• What items stayed the same price, and which ones changed?
• For the items that changed price, did they go up or down?
• If a price went up, do you think you could buy as much with the same amount of money as before?

Take It Further

For older Rangers (ages 9-12), try to calculate the percentage change for each item. Subtract the old price from the new price, then divide that number by the old price, and finally multiply by 100. This will give you a more precise idea of how much inflation (or deflation!) is affecting your chosen goods.
