Mars Drones Go Supersonic: Robots or Humans First?
A hands-on field mission for the Discovery Rangers episode.
Ranger Mission! After listening to "Mars Drones Go Supersonic: Robots or Humans First?", we're going to explore how scientists use models to understand things we can't easily see or touch. Today, we're building our own mini-models to understand how air resistance affects falling objects.
The Big Question
How can we make a falling object move slower, just like a parachute or a drone might?
What You'll Need
- Paper
- Scissors
- Tape
- A few small, lightweight objects (like dried beans, small pebbles, or paper clips)
Mission Steps
- Prepare Your Objects. Take your small objects and decide if you want to test them as they are, or if you want to try taping some paper around them to make them bigger.
- Create Air Catchers. If you're making some objects bigger, cut small pieces of paper and tape them around the objects to create 'wings' or 'sails' that catch the air.
- Drop Test. Hold your objects at the same height (like standing on a chair or a step). Drop them one at a time and watch how they fall.
- Observe Differences. Notice which objects fall faster and which ones fall slower. Did the ones with paper 'wings' fall slower?

- What did you observe when you dropped the objects?
- Why do you think some objects fell slower than others?
- How is this like a parachute slowing down a skydiver or a drone slowing down to land?
Take It Further
For older Rangers (ages 9-12), try making different shapes and sizes of paper 'wings' to see if you can find the best design for slowing down your falling object. Can you make it float down slowly like a feather?
FAQ
Q: My objects all fell at the same speed. A: It's possible, especially if your objects are very small and light and your 'wings' didn't catch much air. Try making bigger paper 'wings' or using objects that are a bit lighter.
Q: Is this really like a drone on Mars? A: It's a model! Models help us imagine and understand complex things. This mission shows how changing an object's shape can change how air affects its fall, which is a principle scientists use when designing things for other planets.
