The Big Question

What You'll Need

• A clear jar or tall glass
• Water
• Food coloring (dark colors like blue or black work best)
• Vegetable oil
• A small amount of glitter or tiny beads

Mission Steps

1. Layer the Liquids. Fill your jar about two-thirds full with water and stir in a few drops of dark food coloring.
2. Add the Oil. Carefully pour a layer of vegetable oil on top of the colored water. Watch how they don't mix!
3. Create a Vent. Sprinkle a pinch of glitter or tiny beads onto the oil layer.
4. Observe the "Eruption". Gently tap the side of the jar or stir very lightly. See how the glitter "erupts" and sinks through the oil into the water, just like minerals from a hydrothermal vent!
