Knocker-Uppers and Candle Clocks: Waking Up Before Alarms
A hands-on field mission for the Discovery Rangers episode.
In our "Knocker-Uppers and Candle Clocks" episode, we learned how people woke up before alarm clocks, using everything from gentle taps to burning candles! Now, you can become a timekeeper yourself with a simple mission to explore how time passes.
The Big Question
How can we measure time without a clock?
What You'll Need
- A tall, thin candle
- A ruler or measuring tape
- A marker
- A safe, clear space (away from anything flammable)
- A timer or watch
Mission Steps
- Mark the Candle. Carefully measure your candle and make evenly spaced marks all the way down. You can also write numbers next to each mark if you like.
- Light and Start. Place the candle in its safe spot and light it. As soon as the flame catches, start your timer or watch.
- Observe the Burn. Watch as the candle burns. Notice how the marks disappear over time.
- Record the Time. When the candle burns down to one of your marks, check your timer and record how much time has passed. Repeat this for a few marks.
Talk About It
- What did you notice about how fast the candle burned between the marks?
- How is this like the candle clocks we talked about in the episode?
- Could you use this to wake up in the morning? Why or why not?
Take It Further
For older rangers, try experimenting with different candle thicknesses or types. Does a thicker candle burn at the same rate as a thinner one? How could you make your candle clock more accurate?
FAQ
Q: Is this safe for my kids? A: Always supervise children closely when using candles and ensure the candle is in a stable, heat-resistant holder away from flammable materials. Q: What if the candle burns too fast or too slow? A: Candle clocks are not perfectly accurate. This mission is about understanding the concept of time passing, not precise measurement. You can adjust the spacing of your marks based on your observations.
The Ranger Field Mission
Run this after every episode to turn listening into something your child actually keeps. Do as many steps as they have energy for — even one counts.
- 1
Say it back
Before snacks or screens, ask your Ranger to teach you the one big idea — as if you'd never heard it.
- 2
Find it in the wild
Hunt for one real example of today's idea — in the kitchen, the yard, the sky, or the sidewalk. Point at it and name it.
- 3
Make something
Draw it, build it from what's on the table, act it out, or record a 20-second “Ranger report.” Making it forces real understanding.
- 4
Ask the next question
Finish with “What's one thing the episode didn't answer?” Stick it on the fridge — that's the start of the next adventure.
