This mission is inspired by our "Fireflies vs Glow Worms: Summer Lights Explained" episode, where we learned how certain creatures can create their own light. Now, you can become a bioluminescence investigator right in your own backyard!
The Big Question
How do fireflies and glow worms make light, and what's the difference between their glow?
What You'll Need
- A dark room or evening outside
- A small flashlight or phone light
- Paper and crayons or colored pencils
Mission Steps
- Gather Your Gear. Find a spot where you can create darkness, like a closet, bathroom, or outside after sunset.
- Darkness Dive. Turn off all the lights. Let your eyes adjust for a few minutes; you might see faint light from windows or electronics.
- Flashlight Signal. Turn on your flashlight for a moment, then turn it off. Think about how this light compares to how fireflies flash.
- Draw the Glow. Imagine a firefly flashing and a glow worm glowing. Draw both on your paper, using colors to show the light.

- What did you notice when you turned off all the lights?
- How was turning your flashlight on and off different from how a firefly flashes?
- How can you tell the difference between a firefly's light and a glow worm's light?
Take It Further
For older Rangers (ages 9-12), research other animals that produce light, like deep-sea creatures or certain fungi. How do their bioluminescent abilities help them survive or communicate in their unique environments?

Q: What if I don't see any fireflies or glow worms outside? A: That's okay! This mission is about understanding the science of light-making. You can still imagine and draw what you learned from the episode. Q: Is it safe to go outside at night? A: Always go with a grown-up and be aware of your surroundings. If you're doing this mission outside, make sure you have adult supervision.
