The Big Question
How does gravity affect different objects?
What You'll Need
- A soft, stretchy piece of fabric (like spandex or a thin sheet)
- A bowl or bucket to hold the fabric taut
- Various small, round objects (like marbles, small balls, or even dried beans)
Mission Steps
- Set Up the Fabric. Stretch the fabric tightly over the opening of the bowl or bucket, securing it so it's taut like a trampoline.
- Add a "Star". Place your heaviest object (like a large marble or small ball) in the center of the fabric. This represents a massive star.
- Observe the Dip. Notice how the fabric dips down around the heavy object. This dip shows how mass creates gravity.
- Roll the "Planets". Gently roll the smaller objects (your "planets") across the fabric towards the center. Watch how their paths curve or how they roll towards the heavy object.
Talk About It
- What happened to the fabric when you placed the heaviest object in the center?
- How did the smaller objects move when you rolled them near the heavy object?
- How is this setup like how planets orbit stars in space?
Take It Further
For older rangers, try adding two heavy objects to the fabric at the same time. See how their gravitational dips interact and affect the paths of the smaller objects. This can help illustrate how multiple massive objects in space influence each other's gravity.
